How to Train Your Dog: A Simple Method
Training is communication. This step-by-step approach uses positive reinforcement, not dominance or fear.
Step 1: Nail sit, stay, come, down. Train in quiet spaces first. One behavior at a time, 5-10 minutes per session.
Step 2: High-value treats beat kibble. Tiny chicken pieces, cheese, or soft training treats. Keep them small so your dog swallows in one bite.
Step 3: Perfect timing. Reward the exact moment the behavior happens. Too early they get rewarded for standing. Too late they do not connect the treat with the action.
Step 4: Short and sweet. Five to ten minutes, two to three times daily. End on a win — finish with something they know.
Step 5: Be consistent. Everyone in the household must use the same commands. Mixed signals confuse dogs and slow progress.
Advanced: Once your dog nails a command inside, test them in the yard, then a dog park, then a busy street. This is generalization — rules apply everywhere.
Redirect, do not correct. Caught them chewing shoes? Redirect to a toy and reward the swap. They learn what you want faster.
A well-trained dog is a confident dog — and a confident dog is a happy dog.
